What To Do When Your Boss Is Taking Credit for Your Work
Doug White wrote an article on Yahoo giving some interesting career advice for situations where your boss won’t share appropriate credit with you, or worse, is actually stealing your ideas.
His main points are:
- Think carefully before complaining - Make sure you truly deserve as much credit as you think you do, and consider giving your boss a pass if it’s an infrequent occurrence.
- Put it on paper - If you notice a pattern where your boss or another co-worker regularly steals your ideas, then establishing a “paper trail” using email, memos, etc. might be a good deterrent. At least it gives you solid ground to stand on if you ever decide to complain.
- Make it public - Announcing your idea publicly makes it much more difficult for anyone else to steal, but it is also riskier because you don’t have a chance to develop it in private with your boss.
- Confront with kindness - Ask your boss for advice on how you can get more recognition for your ideas. Who knows, your boss may have some great suggestions and will be more conscious of your concerns.
